BLACKBERRY PRIV: Amazing display and great design with good OS

INTRODUCTION

Blackberry Limited is a well known smart phone brand which delivers sophisticated phones suitable for business clients. The Blackberry Priv is a fantastic high-end Android powered Blackberry smart phone which was first announced at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona in October 2015. This smart phone carried a code name, Venice and was finally released and made available in the market from 6th November 2015 onwards. The word ‘Priv’ stands for Privacy and Privilege, which reflects the USP of this smart phone. This is a slider smart phone which runs on Android OS and not on the standard Blackberry OS. This smart phone clearly belonging to the super luxury category of smart phone majorly targets the upper-middle-class customers. Being quite on the higher end would be bought by those belonging to the superior economic strata. The major USP’s of Priv are its amazing display, convenient slider keyboard and great operating software. The best part about this smart phone is its high-end security feature. DESIGN & DISPLAY:
    Blackberry Priv comes with a dual edge display and a slideable keyboard. It has a durable rear casing. The texture of the hard plastic rear helps gain a good grip while holding the smart phone. Hence, it is not slippery. The sleek and classy finish of the smart phone makes it feel premium in look and feel. It comes with a length of 147 mm and a breadth of 77.2 mm. The thickness of this phone is 9.4 mm making it a little bulky overall. The major drawback here is its heaviness. It weighs around 192 g and hence is not very handy or portable friendly. The keyboard available in Priv is of QWERTY type. The type of display used in this device is AMOLED display with capacitive touch. The size of the screen is around 5.4 inches and has a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. It comes with a good multi-touch capacity, up to 10 fingers simultaneously. The protection in this smart phone is given using the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 supporting the curved edge screen model. Just like all Blackberry phones, this smart phone too comes only in Black and looks very classy.

PERFORMANCE & CONFIGURATION:

    This is the first Blackberry smart phone which does not come with the standard Blackberry OS v 10. Due to the tremendous success and popularity that the Android OS achieved, Blackberry decided to incorporate the Android OS in this smart phone. This phone works on Android OS v 5.1.1 (Lollipop) which can be later upgraded to v 6.0 (Marshmallow). The chip set present in this smart phone is a Qual comm MSM899 of the Snapdragon 808 type. The central processing in this smart phone is taken care of by a pair of processors. One of the processors is a Dual – core Cortex – A57 processor while the other one is a Quad – core Cortex – A 53. They have an individual clock speed of 1.8 GHz and 1.44 GHz respectively. The graphics in this smart phone is managed by the Adreno 418 GUI. The internal memory capacity of this smart phone is 32 GB. But, in the case of those users who might require more storage memory, this phone also has the option of externally expanding the storage using a micro SD card up to a maximum of 200 GB. The RAM memory aiding the flow of the processes is around 3 GB.

CAMERA & MULTIMEDIA:

    The main camera in Blackberry Priv is 18 MP and has an aperture of focal length f/2.2. The wide angle focus width is around 27 mm. The use of hi-tech Schneider – Kreuznach optics is the key principle behind all the hardware regarding the camera features in this smart phone. It has a sensor of size 1 / 2.4 inches. The other supportive features which are present are OIS, phase detection, auto focus, dual – LED flash (dual tone) and geo-tagging. The front camera is a mere 2 MP with a capture resolution of 720 pixels. The video specifications in this smart phone are that the main camera captures with a resolution of 2160 p at 30 fps. The front camera records low-quality videos with a resolution of 1080 p at 60 fps. The audio is average in this smart phone. A disadvantage here is that it lacks the FM Radio option.

BATTERY & CONNECTIVITY:
    Non – removable, Li – Ion battery with a maximum capacity of 3410 mAh is used to provide the required power to Blackberry Priv. It comes with an average standby time of up to 420 h and a talk time of 24 h on 3 G. It only has a single sim option, and the type of sim to be used is nano sim. GSM is the only compatible network which can be used. It is compatible on both 3G and 4G. It also comes with the basic connectivity features like Wi–Fi and Bluetooth.
       
PROS & CONS:

    The major advantages of this smart phone are the presence of a comfortable keyboard, a good build, and display along with amazing OS. The disadvantages though are its poor front camera, its weight, and high cost.
